Wire Rope Clamps

Tensioned Cable Hardware - Provides a solid perimeter and support foundation to which all types of bird netting can be fastened. 

Connection Hardware - Hardware used to connect the cable to the corner hardware, turnbuckles and the netting mesh.

Standard Wire Rope Clamps (aka wire rope clips or U-bolt clamps)
  • Standard duty wire rope clamps for 3/32” diameter cable.
  • Available in stainless steel or zinc plated galvanized steel.
  • Wire Rope Clamps are the clamping component of all loop connections, lap connections, splices and other methods of joining net cables together.
  • When properly installed, wire rope clamps will support up to 80% of the rated breaking strength of the cable to which they are attached.
  • Important!! Not for lifting. These light duty rope clamps serve to hold the tensioned cables in place but they are not for any type of lifting or suspension of overhead loads.
Available in packages of 10 in either Galvanized or Stainless Steel.

Torque specs for Wire Rope Clamps
  • Stainless Steel Wire Rope Clamps : 2 ft/lbs
  • Galvanized Wire Rope Clamps: 3 ft/lbs
Installation of Stainless Steel & Galvanized Wire Rope Clamps
  • There must be a minimum of at least two wire rope clamps at each loop connection. Three are recommended when installing bird netting or fence in high load applications.
  • We recommend that you match the Wire Rope Clamp material with the cable material. Stainless Steel clamps on stainless steel cables and galvanized clamps on galvanized cables.
  • Loosen the nuts of the Wire Rope Clamps and slide the required number of clamps onto the live net cable.
  • Pass the cable through or around the object you want to fasten the cable to and then back through the wire rope clamps. There should be at least 3” of cable turnback or overlap. The overlapped cable is called the ‘tag’ or ‘dead’ end.
  • Fasten the first wire rope clamp ½” from the end of the overlapped cable. Make sure that the live cable rests in the saddle of the rope clamp and the U-bolt is over the tag or dead end of the cable. Tighten nuts evenly to proper torque setting.
  • Fasten the second wire rope clamp as close to the loop or thimble as possible. Install nuts firmly but do not yet tighten to torque.
  • If installing three wire rope clamps, position the 3rd between the first two. Again, make sure that the live cable rests in the clamp saddle and the U-bolt is over the tag end of the cable. Tighten nuts evenly to proper torque setting.
  • Lastly, pull on the live cable side to take all slack out of the loop connection and tighten the nuts of the last wire rope clamp (one closest to the loop or thimble). Tighten nuts evenly to proper torque setting.
When and Where to use Wire Rope Clamps:
  • A wire rope clamp, sometimes called a U-bolt clamp is used to clamp the loose end of the cable when creating a loop connection. The loose end of the cable is often called the ‘tag’ or ‘dead’ end of the cable.
  • Wire rope clamps are also used to create loops of net cable that can be installed around structural framing members when drilled holes are not allowed.
  • Use the stainless steel wire rope clamps with the stainless steel net cables.
  • Use the zinc plated galvanized steel wire rope clamps with the galvanized net cable.
  • Both types can be used with poly based ropes such as nylon, polypropylene and HDPE ropes.
  • Most commonly used with Nixalite’s Tensioned Perimeter Cable Hardware. Can be used with deer and perimeter fencing hardware and an overhead cable grid systems or anywhere a 3/32” cable is used.
Wire Rope Clamp Installation Tips:
  • Under normal conditions you do not have to disassemble the wire rope clamps to install them. Loosen the nuts so the U-bolt will slide over both the live and tag ends of the cable. The only time you would take the clamps apart is if you are adding clamps to an existing connection.
  • Don’t saddle a dead horse! Make sure that the live side of the cable goes in the saddle of the wire rope clamp and that the U-bolt goes over the dead end of the lapped cable. See illustration.
  • When creating loop connections, install the thimbles into the eyebolt or screw eye eyelets first, then run the cable around the thimble and back through the rope clamps.
