The following specification outline is presented in a modular format making it simple to include or exclude any combination of the Pigeon Spike Composite deterrent systems as needed for each project. List Pigeon Spike Composite 3-part specifications in the following locations; Master Format 1995 – 10290 – Bird & Pest Control Master Format 2004 – 10 81 00 - Pest Control Devices Master Format 2004 – 10 81 13 – Bird Control Devices PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 - SYSTEM DESCRIPTION: A. Pigeon Spike Composite: a low cost spike designed to hinder light roosting of pigeons and seagulls on all types of surfaces. Not recommended for other birds or for the prevention of heavy infestations of any bird. B. Fastening: fasten with available mounting hardware or adhesive (purchased separately). C. Surface Cleaning System: surface disinfectants and deodorizers to neutralize potentially hazardous bird or animal waste and prepare surface for installation. 1.2 - QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer must obtain, review and understand Pigeon Spike Composite Estimating and Installation Guidelines. B. Installer must be completely familiar with the proper installation procedures for Pigeon Spike Composite. C. Installer must be completely familiar with the available fastening procedures. 1.3 - SUBMITTALS A. Pigeon Spike Composite Estimating and Installation Guide. B. Sample of Pigeon Spike Composite - not less than 2” (5.1cm) in length. 1.4 – STORAGE & HANDLING A. Provide storage to keep Pigeon Spike Composite shipping boxes dry, clean and undamaged. Do not stack or place other packaging on these boxes. B. Keep Pigeon Spike Composite in original packaging until needed for installation. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 – ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURER A. Strip Lengths: 12”+ (33.3cm). D. Width & Height: 5” high (12.7cm), 6” wide (15.2cm). E. Points per Inch: NO LESS THAN 20 flat-tipped wire points per foot. F. Application: For pigeons and seagulls on all types of surfaces. Not recommended for other birds or for the prevention of heavy infestations of any bird. G. Finish: Natural stainless steel wire finish and clear polycarbonate base. 2.3 –FASTENING A. Can be fastened with the available mechanical mounting hardware or adhesive (sold separately). Use fastening system recommended by manufacturer. 2.4 – SURFACE DISINFECTANTS A. Steri-Fab: surface disinfectant and bactericide to neutralize bird waste. Do not use with Microcide-SQ on the same surface. B. Microcide-SQ: surface cleaner and deodorizer to sanitize surface and remove any residual odor from bird inhabitation. Do not use with Steri-Fab on the same surface. C. Microsan: anti-bacterial soap and lotion to prevent disease transmittal after working around surfaces contaminated with bird & animal wastes. Use to compliment personal protection equipment standards (PPE). PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 - INSPECTION A. Visually inspect all installation surfaces. Make sure all surfaces are clean, dry and free from debris or other conditions that could impede the workflow of this section. B. Notify architect of detrimental conditions. Do not proceed until these conditions have been corrected. 3.2 - PREPARATION A. Field Measurements: Verify dimensions of each installation surface. Use Pigeon Spike Composite Estimating and Installation Guide to make sure you have sufficient quantity of spikes for the specified surfaces. B. Make sure all installation surface finishing requirements have been accomplished before installing pigeon spikes. Pigeon Spike Composite to be last item installed on specified surfaces. DO NOT apply any surface coating or treatment (paint, sealer, etc.) over the installed spikes. C. Remove or relocate all plants or foliage that overhangs the installation surfaces. 3.3 – SURFACE CLEANING A. All surfaces to be clean, dry and free of obstructions before bird control is installed. B. IF BIRD WASTE IS PRESENT: Treat, neutralize and safely remove all bird waste from installation surfaces. Installer must follow all city, state and federal regulations regarding the proper removal and disposal of bird droppings. C. Use Nixalite’s surface cleaning products to neutralize any bird droppings, nests and related waste materials that may be present. Allow all surfaces to air dry completely, and then reapply to sanitize and deodorize the surface before proceeding. Strictly follow treatment instructions provided with Nixalite’s surface cleaning products. D. Use Nixalite anti-bacterial personal protection products to help prevent disease transmittal when working around surfaces contaminated with bird droppings. 3.4 - INSTALLATION A. Install Pigeon Spike Composite in accordance with manufacturer’s estimating and installation guidelines. Protect all surfaces. B. Protect the entire surface, not just the outside edges. Adjust length of spike base by using the quick part seams. C. Wires of Pigeon Spike Composite to be flush with the outside edge of surface. At open ends of surface, overhang first spike on base at least 1/2” (1.2cm). Use base alignment notch to align spike strips that meet end-to-end. D. No gaps allowed between end-to-end spike strips. No gaps allowed where spike strips meet other surfaces (walls). E. Fasten Pigeon Spike Composite to the surface with available mounting hardware or adhesive (purchased separately). F. Pigeon Spike Composite: For pigeons and seagulls on all types of surfaces. Not recommended for other birds or for the prevention of heavy infestations of any bird. 3.5 – ADJUSTMENTS / CLEANING A. Remove debris and waste materials from project site. B. Inspect finished installation. Make any adjustments needed to conform to the Pigeon Spike Composite Estimating and Installation Guide.
